Knife Vise Construction

Great knife-vise I learned about at the American Bladesmith School. Will hold any length blade and allow user to rotate to a preferred angle while working. I have included some measurements from my vise as a starting point. Build according to your own needs.

Inside CollarInside collar is a 2" diameter by 4.5" long piece of pipe. The screw is a piece of 3/8" by 4.5" all-thread using a 1" diameter by 3" long wood dowel as a handle. A nut is welded on the pipe for the screw to engage. A tiny tab on the back keeps part from slipping out of the outer collar. This tab will pass through the outer collar slot for assembly.

Outside CollarOutside collar is made from a piece of 2.5" diameter pipe about 2.5" long. Cut a ¼" to 3/8" wide slot the length of the pipe. Bottom bar for gripping in a machinist vise is 3/8" by 1.5" by 6" flat bar. The two ears for the clamp screw are ¼" by 1.25" by 2" flat bar. One of the ears has a nut welded to it for the screw to engage. Screw is a piece of 3/8" by 3" all-thread with a 3/16" by ½" by 4" handle.

Wood BlocksThe wood blocks are 2" diameter by 4.5" long. Cut a 3/8" wide slot out of the center. This will give clearance to hold a blade between the two halves. May need a bit wider slot if you wish to put leather on the blocks plus hold a blade? Inlay an 1/8" by ¾" by 1.25" piece of steel into one wood block for the clamp screw to push on.
